The British broadcaster was found to have committed a "significant breach" of media regulations by not revealing that the narrator of a film about the Gaza conflict was the son of a Hamas administrator, as ruled by UK media regulator Ofcom.
An probe by Ofcom into the documentary titled Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has concluded that the documentary was "substantially inaccurate".
The chief executive of the broadcaster had previously apologised, saying there had been "a serious error in relation to truthfulness".
The regulator has directed the BBC to transmit a prime-time statement about its decisions.
"Given this constitutes a major infringement of our rules, we are directing the BBC to broadcast a statement of our determinations against it on BBC Two at 21:00, with a timing to be determined," it said.
'Potential to Erode Trust'
The regulator's announcement declared: "Our investigation determined that the documentary's failure to disclose that the voice's male guardian served in a role in the Hamas-run authority was materially misleading.
"It meant that the viewers did not have critical information which may have been highly relevant to their assessment of the narrator and the details he shared.
"Credibility is at the heart of the relationship between a media organization and its audience, notably for a national broadcasting corporation such as the public broadcaster.
"This error had the risk to damage the exceptionally strong levels of confidence that audiences would have put in a documentary produced by the BBC about the conflict in Gaza."
The documentary was withdrawn from iPlayer in February after the boy's personal associations emerged, and in the month of July an corporation's own inquiry found it infringed the broadcaster's editorial guidelines on factual correctness.
A corporation official said: "The authority's determination is in line with the findings of the internal assessment, that there was a major oversight in the documentary in relation to the broadcaster's journalistic policies on accuracy, which corresponds to clause 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.
"We expressed regret for this and we comply with Ofcom's decision in its entirety. We will follow the directive as soon as the schedule and language are confirmed."
