Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
