Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to contest particular calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
